We implement both Puppy Culture and the Badass Breeder method with our puppies and believe it gives them the best start to life!
ENS begins on day 3 and continues through day 16. The process consists of 5 simple and harmless exercises, which are: tactile stimulation, held with head up, held with head pointed down, lying in the supine position, and thermal stimulation. Each exercise is done for 3-5 seconds the entire process takes about 30 seconds. Research shows that introducing mild stressors in controlled, small doses is actually good for puppies and will help them grow into strong, healthy well-adjusted adults. Benefits include greater tolerance to stress, greater resistance to disease, stronger adrenal system and stronger heartbeat.
Early noise exposure begins when the puppies are 18 days old. While the puppies are in our care, they are exposed daily to new sounds such as vacuums, hair dryers, sirens, etc. and taught not to fear them. Starting on Day 21, a new object is introduced daily to the whelping box. We start out with gentle objects like a pillow or stuffed animal, and slowly work up to items that move or make noise, such as a ball or a crinkly toy. As the puppies grow, this daily exposure becomes more of an activity, like visiting a new room in the house or going for a car ride. Our goal with these daily exposure activities is to show the puppies that the world is a fun and safe place. We want them to have a solid foundation of confidence before they leave for their forever homes.
We introduce a potty spot at 3 weeks old. We use the grate method for potty training, as well as taking the puppies outside to the grass regularly when they are old enough. The puppies learn that there is a designated spot to go potty and will learn to keep the rest of their kennel clean.
We introduce a crate to the kennel at 4 weeks old. Our goal is to get the puppies familiar and comfortable with the crate. They can go in and out as they please and it normally becomes their favorite place to sleep. This creates a positive association with the crate, and makes it much easier for them to start official crate training around 7 weeks.
Gentle grooming is done often on the puppies to get them comfortable with the process. Nails are clipped every week and puppies are bathed, brushed and trimmed as necessary. We also do daily handling exercises where each puppy is held and touched all over their body...ears, mouth, tail, paws, etc. This helps the puppies become comfortable with being handled which will make future grooming much more enjoyable for everyone involved!
Just like humans, dogs have their own individual personalities. When our puppies are 6 weeks old, we have them professionally evaluated. Our trainer has his certifications through P.O.S.T., the only training program in the country recognized for expertise in dog psychology and behavior by the U.S Supreme Court. We believe this is one thing that really sets us apart from other breeders. We want to match you with the right puppy to fit your lifestyle!
